Kicked off the Ship

If you are familiar with Pirate lore, then you may know that women are considered bad luck on a ship. I'm sure there are many reasons, but one of them is the thought that she would attract sharks during her monthly cycle. Yup, it's a post about lady days (as I affectionately call it) so if you are a guy, or just not interested, please click onward. Otherwise, don't worry, it's not too detailed.

I haven't had my lady days since January of 2011, well, that was the case until September 12th! I will probably hate that day from now on. Why was I so lucky you ask? Well I was pregnant for 9 of those months with The First Mate, and now I am still breastfeeding.  In case you aren't aware, breastfeeding can delay a period for some women anywhere from a few months, to a few years.  I was of course, hoping for the latter. I blame two things, food and Facebook for the return of my former flow.

First, the food. My son has always had a healthy appetite, and with the introduction of solid foods, there was no exception. Well the more solid food he eats, the less he nurses. This causes my body to produce less milk and voila, lady days are back . I get it, my son needs to learn to eat real food too, but that doesn't mean I can't be disappointed in the consequences.

Then there's the other culprit, Facebook. How did Facebook cause my period to show up from hiatus? Well I'll tell you how. I was chatting on a cloth Facebook group with ladies about Mama Cloth and Diva Cups. Mama cloth is a reusable cloth pad that is free of chemicals, more economical and comfortable to use. A Diva cup actually sits inside and collects the flow, this is healthier and more economical as well. So there I was thinking about how I didn't have to worry about any of this stuff for a while, since I was still period free. Then, just 4 hours later that changed when my lady day arrived. Not cool.

So let this be a lesson to you all, do not think about your period, just enjoy not having it. However, I'm pretty sure once you stop to say, "Hey this not bleeding thing is awesome!" it will come right back. Almost makes me want to get pregnant again, ... almost. The nearing toddler stage squelches that thought pretty quickly.
