|Meeting Lars Frederiksen. I was probably 20 or 21 years old here. |
I love that we are color coordinated.
This life lesson was never more obvious than when we recently went to see my favorite band of all time, Rancid. I have seen them more times than I can possibly count over the years, but every show is unique and amazing. It's been a long time since I've seen them play. The last time was nearly 3 years ago at this show.
This particular tour was the band's 20th anniversary, which really made me feel old. However, I realized it made me feel young at the same time.
After nearly 20 years of listening to this band, I had built a lifetime of memories. Not only from going to live shows, but also from the music itself. I can remember listening to Blood Clot in my friend's bedroom and replaying it over and over to learn every word. I recall the time spent trying to play bass guitar like the insanely talented Matt Freeman. We danced to the interludes on the audio biography CD on road trips from San Diego to LA. As they played each song, I was taken back to those happy places and that youthful time.
I left the show with a strange mix of feelings. My younger self was feeling energized and invigorated. My nearly thirty year old body was sweaty, a little sore from dancing the entire time, hoarse, and I felt nearly drunk from being so exhausted. Despite all of this, it was a blast and it was nice to feel half my age.
