Citrus Lane October Box: Look at the Loot

Normally I'm counting down the days to our Citrus Lane box, but I didn't even notice it was that time until yesterday. I stalked my email for a shipping notification, and just 20 hours later it was here! I felt a little guilty opening this month's box though. The First Mate was conked out in bed upstairs when I seized the opportunity to snap some photos and scope out the contents.

Citrus Lane October 2013 Box - Pink for Breast Cancer, Movemeber

Disclosure: I am in no way affiliated with Citrus Lane. I do provide a referral link which gets me a $10 credit for anyone who orders a subscription through my link. The Amazon images go through my affiliate link, as I am a member of the Amazon affiliate program.

The first thing I noticed was the box. Citrus Lane has started adding artwork and activities to their monthly boxes. This month's theme was for some popular causes. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and November is Movember, for Prostate Cancer Awareness. On the inside of the box there are punch out mustaches and breast cancer ribbon. The back sides are pink, just like the box.

Citrus Lane October 2013 Box Activity

I was also more excited than usual for this box because it is the first one for my now two year old. I wanted to see how things changed now that he had reached that milestone. Here is what The First Mate received this month.

Citrus Lane October 2013 Box 25 month old boy

Honestly, I had mixed feelings about this box. It seemed a little lack luster and there wasn't really a treat for Mom this time. However, the toys are pretty neat. Let me give you the details.

Green Tones Train Whistle

Even though we already have a train whistle somewhere (probably under the bed to keep it hidden), this is a cool one. It looks like a train and I am certain all two year old boys love trains, and really anything with wheels. It is a but higher pitched than my ears would've liked, but I'll survive. Crap, now I just realized I could have just told him it was a train and ignored the whistle part. Rookie mistake. UPDATE 10-18-2013: The train whistle is already broken, and I SWEAR I didn't do it. In a typical toddler tantrum The First Mate threw his new train whistle. It chipped a nice piece of the green paint off in a chunk and it doesn't seem to whistle unless you put some serious stress on your lungs. I am very glad we didn't pay the $19.94 retail value for this, but it's still a usable train toy.

Boon Water Bugs

Bath toys are usually pretty boring or they leave your bath looking like a rainbow crime scene. These are actually something that is neither of those two things. These floating bug bath toys come with a net so your water baby can scoop them up and catch them in the bath. I am a fan of Boon products, so I'm sure we will like these.

Good Boy Organics BOPS

OK, BOPS are chips, because I know you were wondering what the heck was in the bag. Baked Organic Potato Snacks, see what they did there? I would love to tell you they were good, but I never even got one to try. The First Mate now expects a snack as soon as we open the box. That was the case here. I ran to take care of an errand and my Mom said he ate the whole bag quick. I think this was considered the "Mom" item in the box. Not really a good pick for that. Think chocolate next time.

Cricket Magazine's LADYBUG + 3 Month Digital Subscription

The magazine and digital subscriptions are, well, eh. Again, The First Mate might love it, but I'd rather receive a book that he isn't going to rip apart. I will probably not even use the coupon for digital subscription. Hey, but kudos for a digital subscription and less paper waste.

Overall, this was a B- box in my opinion. Toys were good, but everything else fell flat. In the many months that we have been getting our Citrus Lane subscription we have only received 2 boxes that were less than awesome. That's pretty good odds, so don't let this discourage you. Hey, and maybe you really like some of the stuff that I wasn't in to. Plus, the total value of this box was $38.83, and boxes range from $21-$24 each month. I have posted a review of all our Citrus Lane boxes, so you can go check out what else we've received.

Now would also be a great time to sign up for a subscription because if the consensus is a dud of a box, they usually make up for it the following month. I've got two ways for you to save on a new subscription too. Click on that sweet new banner above and save 50% off your first month's box, making it $12.50 or less. You can also sign up through my referral link and you'll get a $10 credit. Yay for saving money.

If you aren't feeling a subscription, I also have all of the items we have ever received in any Citrus Lane box in The Ship Shop if you just want to pick up an item or too. There are some other cool things in the shop too, so go check it out.

  2. Did you get your box yet? There is a box for older kids with a cool octopus night light. I wish we had gotten that. I really love our subscription, this was just not my favorite.
